Counterion structure and dynamics in polyelectrolyte solutions
نویسنده
چکیده
Investigations of the counterion distribution and correlations to polyelectrolytes have seen increased activity to understand intrinsically stiff and flexible polyelectrolytes in good solvents as functions of ionic strength, charge valence, and concentration. In particular, anomalous (resonant) small-angle X-ray scattering and small-angle neutron scattering have provided new insights on counterion association/ condensation. An area of expected growth is counterion dynamics studied via techniques such as electron paramagnetic resonance and neutron-spin echo spectroscopy where the counterion can be labeled along with pulsed-field gradient nuclear magnetic resonance, which can examine a wide range of time and length scales. Along with these experimental studies, theory and simulations provide important predictions and insight. Published by Elsevier Ltd.

The Eeect of Added Salt on Polyelectrolyte Structure
We present results of molecular dynamics simulations of strong, exible polyelectrolyte chains in solution with added salt. The eeect of added salt on the polyelectrolyte chain structure is fully treated for the rst time as a function of polymer density. Systems above and below the Manning condensation limit are studied. The chain structure is intimately tied to the ion density near the chain ev...
متن کاملObservation of the dynamics of polyelectrolyte strong solutions by quasi-elastic neutron scattering
2014 We report results of quasi-elastic neutron scattering experiments on concentrated polyelectrolyte solutions in water without added salt. The polyion is sulphonated polystyrene, associated successively with sodium and tetramethylammonium counterions. In this second case, all possible configurations of deuterated and non deuterated charged components are tested. The quantities first derived ...
متن کاملTheory of polyelectrolytes in solutions and at surfaces
Polyelectrolytes are polymers carrying either positively or negatively charged ionizable groups. The properties of these polymers in solutions and at charged surfaces depend on the fraction of dissociated ionic groups, solvent quality for polymer backbone, solution dielectric constant, salt concentration, and polymer–substrate interactions. In this review, we summarize the current development o...
متن کاملCounterion penetration and effective electrostatic interactions in solutions of polyelectrolyte stars and microgels.
Counterion distributions and effective electrostatic interactions between spherical macroions in polyelectrolyte solutions are calculated via second-order perturbation (linear response) theory. By modeling the macroions as continuous charge distributions that are permeable to counterions, analytical expressions are obtained for counterion profiles and effective pair interactions in solutions of...
متن کاملCharge density coordination and dynamics in a rodlike polyelectrolyte.
We study static and dynamic correlation functions of segmental charge density fluctuation on a rodlike polymer in ionic solutions. The polymer is described by an effective Hamiltonian which incorporates the Coulomb interaction between fluctuating charges screened by ionic fluid environment. We analytically calculate the correlation functions and discuss how charge distribution and dynamics are ...
